'Miss Saori' Bigleaf Hydrangea

'Miss Saori' Bigleaf Hydrangea

Are you looking for a rapidly growing hydrangea that requires minimal maintenance? Then 'Miss Saori' bigleaf hydrangea is for you! This award-winning dwarf hydrangea was bred in Japan and boasts vibrant white double petals with rose-colored edges and dark green foliage. Its soft yet showy flowers appear quicker than other hydrangea varieties, shortly after planting, and begin their long blooming show from June through September.

This is the perfect shrub for shade gardeners: unlike other types of hydrangeas, this variety can tolerate extended periods of shade. Finally, you can enjoy the prolific summertime blooms from hydrangea shrubs, even in areas without full sunlight! In addition, it's highly adaptable and can thrive in full sun if the soil is consistently moist and well-drained.

'Miss Saori' bigleaf hydrangea also makes an excellent addition to a cut-flower garden, with its hollow solid stems that are long-lasting in vases and bouquets. It also features a rich burgundy color come autumn and blooms on old and new wood year after year.

Details:
Name: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Miss Saori'
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9
Height x width: 2' tall x 2.5' wide
Light: Full shade to part shade
Soil: Evenly moist but well-drained soils are best. A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended in all areas, all year round.
Pruning: Blooms on old wood; do not trim or cut back; dead wood may be removed in early spring.
Water: Average to high water needs. Though bigleaf hydrangeas cannot grow in wet soils, they can readily become drought-stressed and should be watered regularly. Plants in full sun and/or warmer climates will need more water than those in less sun and/or cooler areas.
Fertilizer: Fertilize once in early spring with a rose fertilizer if desired.
Bloom time: Early to mid-summer.
Bloom color: Flower color depends on soil pH; The creamy white color with rose-colored edges in the photos develops best in acidic soils with a high aluminum content.
Uses: This dwarf bigleaf hydrangea lends itself very well to landscaping, as its short stature eliminates the need for pruning. A perfect choice for planting at the front edge of a bed or in a shade garden.
